The US Latino population is projected to double over the next 50 years while the proportion of Latino physicians is expected to decrease over the same interval. Spanish curricula within medical schools are common but rarely assess learners for proficiency and are often not incentivized. Family physicians are well positioned to promote the effective delivery of culturally and linguistically appropriate care to Latino patients with limited English proficiency LEP. Our aim was to develop a replicable, incentivized, medical Spanish curriculum to promote fluency. We developed a peer-taught, interactive, case-based medical Spanish curriculum for fourth-year medical students at a single medical school. All fourth-year medical students were eligible to enroll.

What to Expect in Medical School An overview of what you can expect medical school to be like. Aspiring Docs What will I learn in medical school? Many medical schools organize their training into two parts: In a traditional four-year curriculum, the pre-clinical phase includes two years of science training when you learn about basic medical concepts, the structure and functions of the body, diseases, diagnoses, and treatment concepts.
The clinical portion of the training, traditionally the last two years of medical school, involves clinical rotations, during which time you will receive basic instruction and hands-on experience with patients in the major medical specialties. The curriculum varies for each medical school, and some medical schools have a more integrated, multidisciplinary program and begin clinical training and patient interaction during the first week.

Year 3 introduced you to basic clinical rotations, where the hours were often long and you still had to study for the dreaded shelf exams. Year 4 can be whatever you want it to be. Which begs the question — do you push yourself for tough electives in hopes of better preparing yourself for the intern year? Or do you coast through on easy electives knowing that intern year is a bear that cannot be prepared for, only experienced?

Most of the medical achools in US complete these subjects by 2nd year and eventually all medical students in US will apply and write this competitive exam after their 2nd year in med school during their summer holidays.
This test is unusual for two reasons. First, you take each part at a different stage of your medical education. Second, unlike many standardized tests, the USMLE actually assesses your mastery of the material, not how well you take a test. Step 1 Step 1 is a one-day test, usually taken at the end of the second year of med school.
It emphasizes knowledge of basic sciences, including anatomy, biochemistry, behavioral sciences, microbiology, immunology, pathology, pharmacology and physiology. Topics such as nutrition, genetics and aging are also covered. All questions are multiple-choice. Guide to Your Medical School Application Step 2 Step 2 is a two-day test, usually taken in the fourth year of med school.

People Electives for Fourth-Year Medical Students Students in their fourth year are encouraged to round out their medical education at UVA with study of the medical humanities and biomedical ethics. Humanities and ethics study can help students to 1 cultivate skills of critical and reflective thought; 2 reflect on ethics, values, traditions, spiritual concerns, and professional life; 3 explore the many dimensions and contexts of human experience; and 4 attend to their own formation as professionals.
Skills acquired and refined through study of the humanities and ethics contribute to humanistic qualities and professional competencies that medical schools and residency programs routinely assess, including communication and narrative skills, compassion, self-reflection, ethics and professionalism, respect for others, cultural understanding, and understanding of medicine in society. Humanities and ethics electives are offered throughout fourth year. Most are four-week courses.
A student may take up to eight weeks total of humanities and bioethics course work toward graduation. Courses are offered only if there is an enrollment of at least four students.

I celebrate myself, and sing myself, And what I assume you shall assume, For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you. I loafe and invite my soul, I lean and loafe at my ease observing a spear of summer grass. My tongue, every atom of my blood, form’d from this soil, this air, Born here of parents born here from parents the same, and their parents the same, I, now thirty-seven years old in perfect health begin, Hoping to cease not till death.
Creeds and schools in abeyance, Retiring back a while sufficed at what they are, but never forgotten, I harbor for good or bad, I permit to speak at every hazard, Nature without check with original energy.

Vitellius 69 The Roman Empire “officially” begins by tradition in 27 BC when Octavian receives the title “Augustus” — which then becomes the name by which we know him. We might think that the Empire, Imperium, begins with Augustus becoming Emperor, Imperator, but that is not the case. Imperator simply means “commander,” and this had long been in use with a specific meaning. An imperator was someone with a military command and imperium, which meant both military and civil authority in the area of his command.
This made Julius Caesar essentially the dictator of Gaul , once he had conquered it. That was dangerous, indeed fatal, for the Republic; but in those terms Julius Caesar began the creation of the Roman Empire already as an “emperor. It accompanies the institutional changes that were effected or completed by Augustus. The institution thus created now gets called the “Principate,” from Princeps, “Prince” literally, “comes first”. The idea of the Principate is that the forms of the Republic are retained, and the Emperor superficially is simply still an official of the Republic.
Augustus was not a king. He did not even hold the Republican office of Dictator, as Julius Caesar had. But Augustus otherwise assembled offices and authority sufficient to explain the power that he had actually obtained by force. In time, the Emperor came to be regarded as superior to any mere king, as the reach and authority of many Emperors was indeed great beyond precedent or local comparison.
While it seems natural and obvious to take Augustus as the successor to Julius Caesar and his new Imperial government as the successor to the Roman Republic, there was another way of looking at this.

Having a Baby During Medical School “I am totally dedicated to getting into your medical school and believe I would make an excellent doctor. However, I’d like to have a baby. When would be the best time to do that? But for many MomMD members, this question at the top of their “cannot-be-discussed” list. There seems to be no perfect time to have a baby during medical school, yet there are many women having planned or surprise babies during medical school, and it is something that can be done.
Hear what MomMD members have experienced in the following examples. All names have been changed to protect identity. This article was based on discussions in one of the medical school forums. I had a baby during my fourth year, and took the year after my graduation off before starting residency. However, I know several people who have taken breaks mostly at the end of second year.
This is kind of a natural break point, because at most medical schools the first two years are spent in the classroom, and the second two years are spent doing clinical rotations. There are also some cushy research jobs that can allow you a great deal of flexibility if you look around,” says one MomMD member. But why on earth would anyone choose to have a baby during challenging medical school years?
